He sought medical attention at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute on January 14, 2022, and later received specialized treatment in a South African hospital before returning to JKCI. Unfortunately, the former prime minister succumbed to his prolonged illness.

In a noteworthy political move, Lowassa defected from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party to the main opposition camp in 2015.
